Leah A. Powell

Leah Powell Leah A. Powell is a native of Chicago Illinois. Her parents were Chicago Public School teachers. Leah attended Kenwood High School. Leah is the middle child and has two sisters, who are two of her best friends. Before college, Leah was involved in X-bag (Experimental Black Theater) and honed her acting skills that she initially learned by watching too much television. At times, Leah made up tall tales and once had her parents convinced that two drunk men grabbed her and made her late coming home from the store as a cover-up for not obeying their directives.  She did not tell her parents the truth until she was an adult for fear of retribution. Her father was a Chicago policeman at the time and was probably packing during the “drunk hunt!” Leah did go to college and received a degree in Business/ Marketing after attending the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana. There she became involved with a Christian organization called the Navigators. After graduation, Leah married Tyrone Powell, also a business student at the U of I, and together they served as Navigator staff workers in Bloomington, Indiana. There they ministered to African–American Indiana University college students. Leah Powell did graduate work at Ball State University while her husband was completing his doctoral studies in Counseling Psychology at Ball State. She then pursued her own degree in counseling after their move to Terre Haute, Indiana and received a Master’s of Science in Agency Counseling and then a Ph.D. in Guidance and Psychological Services with a specialization in Counseling Psychology from Indiana State University. Leah is currently a licensed psychologist at the Hamilton Center in Brazil IN. Leah enjoys laughing with her clients and telling them crazy stories. She enjoys many hobbies which include quilting, reading, traveling, acting, writing, and skit and song writing. She is published in the “This I Believe” online essay journal. Leah has three adult children; a daughter, Maria and two sons Zachary and Whitney, who along with her husband, Ty are great joys in her life and she also enjoys her involvement with her church family.
